With strict regulations and limits on social gatherings, it can be hard—and even startling—to remember a time when kids were all allowed to folic freely, do arts and crafts, play games, and breathe the same air. But the staff who run Eden Village Camp remember. And after canceling their sessions this past summer, they’re hoping to once again provide a safe space for their beloved campers in 2021.

If you haven’t heard of it, Eden Village Camp is an “Innovative Jewish organic farm camp in the Hudson Valley” that focuses on environmentalism, social justice, and spirituality. The campers eat mostly vegetarian food, such as Organic Ricotta Pancakes with Organic Apple Cider Syrup for breakfast, Organic Baked Potatoes with Southwestern Lentil Chili for lunch, and Miso-glazed Wild Salmon with an Organic Soba Noodle Salad for dinner.

Activities include archery, paddleboarding, scavenger hunts, night hikes, theater games, Torah yoga, tincture making, basket weaving, and homesteading (think chopping wood or sewing curtains). They also have a no “body talk” rule, which encourages the campers to take a break from commenting on others’ appearances and use their energy to connect with each other in a more constructive, positive way.

“Everyone is accepted wholeheartedly for who they are, where they are, without judgment,” says Beth Praver, Eden Village Camp’s Director of Parent Engagement. “I made my first friend at Eden Village. Being nice is cool at Eden Village.”

In order to ensure that Eden Village will be able to provide a safe, nurturing space for its campers next summer, they’re throwing a virtual fundraiser on December 5th. The One Day Benefit Concert, hosted by the Eden Village Alumni Committee, will feature Peter Yarrow, Dar Williams, Joey Weisenberg, and MaMuse, along with more than 100 of Eden Village’s campers!
