A Tranquil Dinner @ Peacefood Cafe

Peacefood Cafe was founded by two vegans—an antiques dealer and an interior designer—in 2009 and was “named after the simple idea that peace begins on your plate.” The original kitchen & bakery became so popular that the owners, Peter and Eric, opened a Union Square location in 2013. Peacefood is now known throughout the city as a tried-and-true spot for creative, delicious vegan food. We stopped by for dinner recently and were, unsurprisingly, delighted with our meal.

In addition to serving a wide array of plant-based, gluten-free, and “almost gluten-free” food, Peacefood has a raw menu, which includes their Sushi Roll (made with walnut pâté & seasonal julienne vegetable), Pizza (think buckwheat, sweet potato, and a flaxseed crust), and Lasagna (which boasts zucchini, mushrooms, cashew cheese, and more). As they say, “The colorful antioxidants can boost your energy, soothe your eyes and satisfy your taste buds.”

We opted for the raw Sushi Roll and found it crisp and fresh. We also loved the side salad which came with a handful of extra-crunchy jicama sticks. For the main course, we ordered the Asian Greens Salad, which was brimming with a springy mix of seasonal veggies, mixed sprouts, shredded carrots, and super-flavorful tempeh. Because we love protein, we also grabbed the side of Seitan which was juicy and grilled to perfection.

We were too full to indulge this time, but we mourned our inability to eat Peacefood’s famous Chickpea Fries, which are not only a bestseller but also packed with protein. Next time! It’s no secret that Peacefood has amazing vegan desserts so there was no back and forth on whether or not we’d order one. The questions of what to order, however, was a real conundrum. In the end, we opted for the decadent dairy-free Chocolate Chip Cookie, which was roughly the size of a grapefruit but far sweeter.
